Duration: 2 Days - 5 Days

Subject: An introduction to the geology of Cornwall - 400 million years in the making!  We tour the county comparing the different geologies, including the giant granite batholiths, to the slates and sandstones and the more curious geologies, including the lizard complex & serpentines.

If you wish, we can also look at the minerals and economic geology of the county.

Tectonics

Duration: 1 Day - 2 Days

Subject: How have the tectonics of the region effected the local geology?  We look back at the main tectonic events which have shaped the county.

We will view examples of folding and faulting and it is a great opportunity to gather data for use back in the classroom.

Modern Geology

Duration: 1 Day - 3 Days

Subject: We will look at modern day geology.  Depositional environments (alluvial, fluvial and aeolian).

We will see a vast wind blown dune system, which has engulfed entire buildings.

We shall also visit estuary locations, where we will observe first hand how inland ports have been cut off due to sedimentation.

Geomorphology

Duration: 1 Day

Subject: We look at how the geology of the county has effected the topography.  Why do most cornish rivers flow to the south coast? - We look at the causes.  The county has a range of environments including highland areas, deep river valleys and large flat areas - how does the geology effect this?  This module would fit very well with a look at the geomorphology of the area, and can easily be combined with the 'highland topography' module.

Geological Mapping

Duration: 1 Day - 3 Days

Subject: How do you map rocks?

In this module you will learn a series of techniques to do just that.  From recording and describing the type of rock to orientating the features within the rock.

For higher level students we can go into much more detail including 'way up' criteria and establishing the age of different features.
